DS5 Stack Diluting Sampler

Stack sampler is an easy to use device that provides accurate pre-dilution of high temperature gas emissions with nitrogen or zero-air to minimize condensation inside the sample bag. Dilution is achieved inside the heated probe and can be controlled from 1:3 to 1:305 in 14 steps.

Basics of Operation
  1. Attach the sample bag
  2. Open the valve on the Nitrogen micro-tank
  3. Select the desired dilution from 1:3 to 1:305 bu installing the corresponding dilution disk
  4. Insert the probe into stack and allow 3 minute for it to reach the same temperature as the stack gases
  5. Press the trigger and wait for the sample bag to fill up.
Capabilities

If hot gasses emitted from a stack are directly placed in a Tedlar or Nalophan bag they begin to develop condensation. These small droplets of water absorb many of the critical components that contribute to the overall odour of the sample. The stack diluting sampler eliminates this problem by mixing the stack air with dry clean Nitrogen so that the moisture can’t condense inside the bag. The mixing happens inside the probe and since the probe becomes at the same temperature as the stack air, there is no chance of the sample developing condensation before being mixed with Nitrogen.

EPA model sh50

The scentroid static hood sampler is designed to the EPA guidelines with an enclosed area of 0.5 square meters. The solid stainless steel construction makes for rapid and easy cleaning. The surface can be cleaned to ensure no cross contamination affects the samples. To acquire a sample simply:

1. Place the static hood on the surface and firmly press down.
2. Wait for the sample to fill the hood three times.
3. Acquire the sample at half the rate of emission.

Portable Model

The 0.25 square meter model provides a smaller and more portable version to be used with the SM100 for assessing the efficiency and health of a bio-filter. The SM100 can be connected directly to the sample port of the Scentroid static hood for direct measurement. ODMAP software can be used to plot and assess the health and efficiency of the bio-filter.

FAQ

How many points do you measure on a typical bio-filter bed?

The number of points checked by static hood and olfactometery is directly proportional to the size of the bio-filter bed. For example a distance of 1.5-2 meters between grid points can be used to get an accurate reading of the efficiency of the bio-filter.

Can I use the static hood for sampling from an aerated lagoon?

While a lagoon is an active source it is best to sample the lagoon with a flux chamber. The SF450 has two special relief vent ports that should be opened to ensure minimal pressure built up.  Sample can then be pulled using a vacuum chamber.

How do I draw a sample from the static hood?

You can perform direct measurement with SM100 or other field instruments, or draw air using a vacuum chamber into a PTFE bag for laboratory analysis. Sampling rate should be kept about half as much as the air flow in the stack of the static hood.

How do I decontaminate the static hood after field sampling?

The SH50 and SH25 are made of 316L stainless with PTFE coating and therefore resist contamination very well. Usually clean water is all you need, but most unscented cleaning solutions can be used.

SF450, FLUX CHAMBER

The Scentroid Flux chamber (AKA Emission Isolation Flux Hood) is used to determine levels of emissions from solid or liquid surfaces. The SF450 has a 100% solid stainless steel construction to ensure zero cross-contamination. Flotation is achieved using 4 stainless steel floats eliminating the need for rubber tubes or foam making the unit easy to clean and maintain.

Can I use the SF450 Flux Chamber for petrochemical industry ?

Absolutely. The SF450 is ideally suited for the petrochemical industry where many corrosive chemicals need to be sampled. Unlike other Flux Chambers on the market that use Plexiglas dome and foam or rubber floaters, the SF450 is made of 100% stainless steel and therefore can be used in any environment.

How do I decontaminate the SF450 Flux Chamber

The SF450 is made entirely of 316L stainless steel and therefore can be easily cleaned with water in most cases. For sticky substances most solvent or unscented soaps can be used.

How do I use the SF40 Flux Chamber for sampling aerated tanks?

Most aerated tanks provide enough positive air flow to be classified as active sources. These sources can be sampled via SF450 Flux Chamber by removing the sweep air line and opening the relief port. This allows the excess gas to escape making the Flux Chamber act as a static hood on liquid surfaces.

Should I use nitrogen or zero-air for sweep air?

Nitrogen provides the added advantage of minimizing oxidization of the sample in transport, but ultimately what is available at site will dictate this choice. If Nitrogen is not available zero-air or even odourless air will work well for olfactometry if delay between sampling and analysis is minimal.

  • Connect the Sample bag to the PTFE tube inside the vacuum chamber
  • Close the vacuum chamber
  • Connect the external sample line to the sample collection device (i.e probe or Flux chamber) for source sampling or leave off if sampling ambient air.
  • Switch to Sample function to draw in the sample air
  • Stop when sample is half full and switch to Purge routine to exhaust all the lines and the sample bag with source air.
  • Switch to Sample function again and fill the bag with sample air.
  • Turn unit off and open the case
  • Close sample bag valve and remove it from the vacuum chamber.
